USS Alabama

We could not pass through Mobile Alabama with out stopping to see the USS Alabama

MzDazy with the Alabama

These babies throw a projectile 16 inches in diameter, 60 inches long, and weighing 2800 pounds about 21 miles! that is a VW coming from over the horizon to fall on your head!

Two men, a rope and that winch on the deck was what was used to move these massive projectiles. Don’t let it tip over! Don’t forget the ship is pitching and rolling along with the jolt of every time the 16s were fired.

Martha was having fun with all the guns!

Everywhere you looked there where pin-ups.

Cereal was a breakfast staple along with sausage and oatmeal.

After all that fiber and grease, you can go to the Head with 50 of your shipmates. There is another row facing this one with no wall in between. You know everything about your shipmates!!

When you want to get away and have some piece and quiet after a long day of shelling a beach, forget it! Anything you did not know about your shipmates from your time together in the head, you found out here. Light sleeper?

There were a few luxuries to make life seem more like home. If smoking was not your thing, they did have Cracker Jacks and Hershey bars.

If you can’t be a good Sailer, its off to the brig with you!

This is the instrument panel for one of the high pressure steam turbines that moved this massive gun through the water at 27MPH.

Guns, guns, and more guns!

Also onsite is the USS Drum. Appropriately named as it is just one big drum!

If you like to stay close to your work, you can be a torpedo man. You get to sleep right next to the torpedos!

Lots of brass to polish in here so you don’t get bored.

How would you like to spend you time standing between 2 Diesel engines? My uncle, Bill Daly, was a submariner for over 20 years. He is 6 foot 6 inches tall. I can only imagine all the bumps on this head.

The men that ran these subs had to be able to do it all in the dark incase the lights went out. No thank you.

I am glad I get to watch the sun set over Mobile from the drivers seat of Mz Dazy.
