May Fun, and not fun

After a fun couple of weeks together, Liz and Boyd headed home and we headed south to attend our nephew Kevins wedding to the marvelous Meredith in DeLand, Florida. Our first stop was Charleston, SC.

We spent the day walking around the old town and through this market. Lots of neat stuff to look at.

Being from the western states, it is cool to see things approaching 400 years old.

Some of the old streets are stone. I am sure the concrete between is a serious improvement over the original.

There are lots of squares throughout the city that give a nice green space. This is Washington Square in honor of his visit to the city after he was President.

Ruckus was not falling for the fake dog this time!

As there is not much camping near the old city, we found this parking garage that had RV parking and did not care if you stayed overnight. It was only $18. I would say that you should either be a heavy sleeper or stay out partying until the wee hours because everyone else does.

This is the USS Huntly. It was the first military submarine and had a crankshaft that ran the entire length and was human powered.

After a night in Charleston, kept south and did a driving tour of Savanah, GA. It was a neat city, but we never found a place that we could park MzDazy so we could explore on foot. We continued on to a RV Park a little further south that had a nice pool to relax in for Mother’s Day and then on to Crooked River State park.

We had been here back in February and really enjoyed ourselves.

They have some very nice walking trails through the woods there.

After a couple of relaxing days at Crooked River State Park it was time to head down to DeLand and the big wedding. Well, MzDazy had a different plan. Not too long after getting up to speed on I95 the oil pressure made a dip. A minute later it dipped a little further. I had a good idea of what this meant and pulled over right away. Sure enough, copious amounts of oil were dripping from the engine. The dipstick was clean……

I added the gallon of oil we had with us and drove fairly slowly to the next exit where there was a truck stop. The mechanics there wanted nothing to do with a bus. After calling just about every mobile mechanic and a few shops, it was unanimous, nobody wanted to work on a bus. I called my favorite diesel mechanic, my nephew Kelly. He suggested filling it with oil and driving the minimum speed on I95 and stop every 25 miles and top it up with oil to get us to Kevin’s for the wedding and hopefully a shop that would work on it. That’s what we did and 115 miles and 7 gallons of oil later, we made it.

With MzDazy safely on the farm, it was time for a wedding! Come Monday it was time to get back to figuring things out with this engine. Most of the oil leak was located and the cause of it getting so bad was determined to be very high crankcase pressure. A sudden increase in pressure means MzDazy’s engine most likely broke something inside. A shop was located and after much debate and soul searching, a new engine was ordered.

Luckily for us, the Bride and Groom have a cottage that they rent out and their tenant was moving out at the end of the month. Since that was still a couple weeks away, we rented a car and headed back up to Georgia to spend some more time with Liz and Boyd.

We went and visited Kennisaw Mountain Park.

The old canon emplacements at the top of the mountain had a great view. I can’t imagine trying to storm the mountain with canon balls raining on you.

Martha and I spent an afternoon wandering around downtown Canton.

Imagine, we stumbled across a small brewery! what luck.

The nice people at Greenline Brewing pointed us to the other brewery in downtown. How nice of them!

Saturday, we all piled in the car and headed to Helen, GA. It is a neat little Bavarian town about an hour and a half from Canton. This is where several scenes in the movie Smokey and the Bandit were filmed.

Every year there is a “Bandit Run” from Texarkana to Destin, and then they all come to Helen for a few days. There were hundreds of Trans Ams and Buford T Justice was well represented as well.

On Memorial Day, Boyd’s Family gathered at his sister’s house for a pool party and BBQ. Unfortunately his sister was out of town, but we all had a great time.
