As far West as you can drive

That little strip of sand, rock, and tourist traps is as far west as you can drive in North America on the national highway system. It is the Homer Spit and it sticks out into Ketchemak Bay near the tip of the Kenai Peninsula. We spent 5 days at the “fishing hole” about 3/4 of the way out to the tip. We met lots of nice and interesting people from all over the country and never even set foot in the famous Salty Dog Saloon, or any other bar either. Mz Dazy is well stocked!

On the way back from the beach, Ruckus mistook a giant mud hole for a swimming pool He came out vey happy with himself looking like a spring lamb. Martha said he looked like he had on ExtraTuff boots. He did not enjoy the resulting ice cold hose bath!

This mosaic tile floor is at the Homer Visitor’s center. The very nice ladies that worked there insisted we take all kinds of brochures for things we had no interest in. Our fire was easy to light though!

Mz Dazy had a Doctor’s appointment on Friday. While she was there a friend and former Harris air coworker, Kelsey lent us her car to go explore. This is the view of Homer from Skyline Drive. Boy was it windy up there!

Down on Bishop’s Beach we found this driftwood log cabin. It looked like it was in current use. Maybe check AirBnB for rates!

Tidepooling is one of Martha’s very favorite things to do. Homer did not disappoint at all.

A nice JUNUARY day for a walk on the beach at low tide.

Those ridges in the sand made the ball bounce erratically, so Ruckus got lots of exercise.

Mz Dazy watching the action at the Fishing Hole. The day before they had opened up to snagging of King Salmon and there were people shoulder to shoulder throwing and yanking giant weighted treble hooks as hard as they could. I stayed out of range!

This Eagle claimed the fish cleaning station as his. He chased dogs that came near. Unfortunately, many of people there fed him to get pictures and the Wildlife Trooper had to hang around to “educate” them.

A safe place to watch the action. Martha started referring to the windshield as the TV. “Turn off the TV and come to bed”. That horn button is a great drink holder.

On Sunday we met up with our friends, Jason and Trena Dagenheart and their kids for dinner. Moose burgers were awesome. On Monday morning, Jason and I got to help out the current owner of our favorite Beaver, Nothwind Aviation, where Kelsey happens to work, fix a problem they were having. Aviation is a very small world. Jason took care of that Beaver for Harris Air when I got there, then me, then Paul, and now Jed at Northwind.
